Summer 2018 Undergraduate Internship - NYC

The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law is a non-partisan public policy and law institute that focuses on improving the systems of democracy and justice. A singular institution – part think-tank, part public interest law firm, part advocacy group – the Brennan Center combines research, scholarship, legislative and legal advocacy, and communications to win meaningful, measurable change in the public sector.

We are seeking interns to provide administrative and clerical support to staff in our New York office in our Communications, Democracy, Development, Finance & Operations, Human Resources, Justice, and Liberty & National Security Programs/Departments.

Responsibilities: All interns will assist with general administrative, research and clerical work for the Brennan Center, including filing, photocopying, answering phones, shipping and mailing, coordinating meetings, drafting routine correspondence and covering the reception desk.  Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work.

In addition to administrative and reception duties, specific responsibilities for each department include:

  • Development – assisting in event organization; conducting prospect research; assisting in donor correspondence; updating the fundraising database; preparing mailings to donors; and supporting the individual giving and foundations teams.
  • Communications – Tracking and organizing press coverage; managing our press database; creating press clips and tear-sheets; building and updating press lists; creating and editing event transcripts; and assisting with public and private events. 
  • Democracy – Providing support for litigation, assisting in the research for and rollout of reports, and aiding the program’s advocacy efforts in Voting, Money in Politics, Fair Courts, and Redistricting.
  • Finance – working closely with Controller/Accountant on account analysis, reconciliation, and presentation preparation for the annual Audit; assisting in processing payables and receivables; and backing up Accounts Payable staff, after learning software and systems.
  • Human Resources – assist the HR Specialist and HR Director with research projects, on-boarding of new hires, recruiting support, filing and auditing of personnel files, and assisting human resources staff.
  • Justice – Tracking developments in criminal justice; building lists of key stakeholders; conducting background research; assisting with report research, editing, and rollout; and administrative support.
  • Liberty & National Security - conducting research on program issues, such as surveillance, religious and racial profiling, and counter-terrorism initiatives; copy-editing and cite checking research papers, blogs, op-eds, or other materials; assisting with scheduling, mailing publications, and maintaining contact lists.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates are independent self-starters; detail-oriented; energetic; punctual; and highly organized. Interns must also have excellent, research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as a passion for our issues. Experience with Windows XP, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word a must. Database experience is very helpful. Applicant must be open to evolving responsibilities.

This internship is only open to current undergraduate students.

Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week.

Pay: $13.00 per hour.

Duration: May – August 2018.
