Senior Social Media Strategist

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.


The Senior Social Media Strategist (with support from the Digital Marketing Strategist) is responsible for  promoting the Brennan Center’s programmatic priorities, building our social voice, maintaining content calendars, coordinating deployment of social media assets, as well as day-to-day publishing and community management.





  • Write clear and compelling social copy that represents the values of the Brennan Center
  • Become an expert on our programmatic goals and provide counsel and trainings to Programs colleagues on social media strategy
  • Build and schedule social media posts
  • Coordinate with other channel owners to ensure consistent voice across channels/venues
  • Be a strategic partner by brainstorming ideas to support campaign, program, and development initiatives
  • Maintain content calendars to optimize posting across social channels
  • Identify opportunities for live experiences on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and support planning and production
  • Monitor news and current events in our issue areas and work closely with Media, Editorial and Creative teams to develop and vet social content based on current opportunities
  • Manage relationships and negotiate contracts with vendors



  • Build and maintain a consistent voice across all Brennan Center social media channels
  • Develop and ensure implementation/execution of overarching Brennan Center social media strategy to increase engagement and grow audiences across all platforms in order to build brand awareness, as well as advance advocacy and fundraising goals
  • Drive the integration of social media strategy with the larger Comms/organizational strategy
  • Responsible for creating and executing legal and effective strategies to influence the White House, Congress, and other influential policy makers. 



  • Oversee the creation of daily content (7 days a week, 365 days a year) for all of Brennan Center’s social media channels
  • Develop and maintain a content calendar across all of Brennan Center’s social media channels
  • Create and supervise new social media channel accounts to drive audience growth and engagement (eg Brennan Center’s Democracy Defenders)
  • Manage the day-to-day content and strategy for Brennan Center President Michael Waldman
  • Develop content for our various audiences with the goals of education, awareness, engagement, mobilization, and fundraising
  • Assess every piece of content (policy publication, press hit, media statement, opinion, and analysis) and develop social media language and post strategy to maximize visibility and impact
  • Ensure all content adheres to Brennan Center policies, legal guidelines, as well as considers DEI risks and opportunities



  • Collaborate with fellow Comms and program staff to integrate social media strategy into every Brennan Center initiative to support program advocacy goals and build engagement with key audiences
  • Create strategic social media plans around upcoming campaigns, news and events; identify potential opportunities to engage with audiences online 
  • Work with every member of the Media team to respond to social media posts that include questions, comments and related opportunities for Brennan Center to engage
  • Collaborate with program staff and key stakeholders to promote announcements, press releases, reports, events, breaking news and various days of observance on social media.
  • Manage and execute the paid social media ad strategy to promote our editorial and campaign content



  • Stay up-to-date on new social media tools and best practices; monitor competitors and other social media leaders to see how they are using them to be the early adopter of technologies
  • Research and stay ahead of trends in social media, non-profit marketing, and advocacy
  • Build reporting structure for gathering social media analytics to measure and improve the work of our organization in reaching and engaging target audiences
  • Provide training, technical support and strategic guidance to staff with regard to organizational messaging priorities and implementation of strategic initiatives, as well as social media best practices



  • 5 - 8 ears relevant online production experience preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple campaigns within multiple initiatives at once
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize initiatives based on performance and success metrics
  • Demonstrated ability to grow audience and engagement, both organic and paid
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly generate compelling, error-free prose
  • Experience managing social media advertising campaigns
  • Excellent written, verbal, and project management skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment
  • Ability to remain cheerful, calm, and organized even when you get another set of last-minute changes
  • Clear, proactive communication
  • Passion for democracy, justice, and rule of law issues
  • Sense of humor



  • Experience producing, editing, and/or designing digital content (images, graphics, social shareables



The salary is highly competitive in the field and commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package is available as well.
